The adrenaline of some professional cyclists has been raised following the announcement of $700,000 prize money for the much-awaited Derbywheel cycling championship. The race organised by the World Keiren body has attracted over 70 male and female top derbywheel riders worldwide.

Set for April 26-28, 2024, the 3-day much-anticipated cycling exhibition is scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom in a yet-to-be-announced velodrome.

The arrival of DerbyWheel promises to provide a new foundation to the track cycling ecosystem that will help make the economic model of the sport more sustainable and facilitate growth. DerbyWheel events will provide significant additional earning potential for riders at all levels making the sport sustainable for existing riders and providing a pathway for new riders to enter the sport.

In terms of talent development, DerbyWheel will provide a pathway to develop riders through the creation of Keirin academies by working with Federations to complement their existing talent development programs. This comes as refreshing news for African riders due to the difficulty in funding their activities and it’s no surprise that these riders have embraced Derbywheel competitions.
