Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has disclosed that boxers representing the country failed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games because they were not disciplined enough.
He noted that the GOC supported the Black Bombers to qualifiers in Senegal, Italy and Thailand but they could not make it.
Speaking to ace journalist Kwabena Yeboah, President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), on GTV Sports+, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah gave his views and thoughts on why Ghanaian boxers failed to qualify after Samuel Takyi has done marvelouely well at Tokyo 2020.
“I think it has to do with the discipline of our boxers. If it were us, these young boys, kept in camp somewhere, checking on their discipline, their behavior, and their schedule, I am sure we would have made a lot of difference”.
“These are guys coming from a community like Bukom, and there is a lot of vibrancy you always want to show up in every evening in one spot or another, so despite all the vigorous training they had during the day, I haven’t been too comfortable with the kind of life they have.”
“Until we get to the level where we can monitor and check how these boxers behave away from training, we are going to have a lot of problems, especially among boxers coming from that community.”
Many boxing experts and media people called for residential camping for the boxers; however it was not complied due to lack of funds as the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) could not afford.
