Accra, 18th September 2024 – The Electoral Commission of Ghana has officially acknowledged the receipt of a petition submitted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following a mass demonstration held earlier today.

The protest, organized by the NDC, aimed to express concerns about the ongoing voter registration process ahead of the December 2024 general elections.

In a statement released by the Commission, Deputy Chairman for Operations, Samuel Tettey, confirmed that the petition is under review and assured the public that the Commission would respond to the NDC’s concerns in the coming days.

“The process of producing the Final Register is in its early stages,” the statement read, underscoring that the Commission is fully committed to ensuring that the voter register, a key element in the credibility of the electoral process, will be robust, transparent, and reliable.

The Commission reiterated its dedication to delivering a fair and accurate final voter register ahead of the December polls.

Mr. Tettey further assured the NDC and other stakeholders of the Commission’s readiness to address any concerns and maintain an open dialogue throughout the electoral process.

“Our doors remain open. We look forward to engaging the NDC on their concerns,” he added.

The NDC’s demonstration and subsequent petition reflect ongoing tensions surrounding the voter registration process, which many consider crucial in determining the integrity of the upcoming elections.

The Electoral Commission’s response will be closely watched by political parties and civil society groups in the weeks leading up to the election.

As the process moves forward, the Commission is expected to provide updates and address the concerns raised in the NDC’s petition, maintaining its role as an impartial and transparent arbiter in the country’s democratic processes.
