The Election Situation Room (ESR) has released its initial observations on the opening of polls for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, chairman of the ESR, reports from observers indicate that 63% of polling stations opened on time, while 37% experienced delays.

Despite some delays, most Electoral Commission (EC) officials followed established electoral procedures, including displaying empty ballot boxes in front of voters.

Observers also noted a good representation of females at polling stations, as well as consideration for persons with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant, and lactating mothers.

However, several technical incidents and security concerns were reported. In one instance, a former District Chief Executive (DCE) was seen moving around a polling station with five police officers, sparking concerns about potential intimidation.

In another incident, a voter was caught taking a photo of their ballot paper, which was deleted by a security officer.

Security incidents were also reported in several regions, including the Upper East Region, where gunmen allegedly threatened voters not to support a particular party. In another incident, a party agent was allocated a separate seating area after refusing to move away from the EC officer.

The ESR has been engaging with the EC, National Election Security Taskforce, and other stakeholders to address these incidents and ensure a peaceful voting process.

The ESR recommends increasing security presence in affected areas and encourages all registered voters to cast their ballots before the close of polls.

The chairman, Dr. Adu Gyamfi indicated that, the ESR will continue to monitor the voting process and provide updates in collaboration with stakeholders.
