The St. Augustine’s Past Students Union (APSU), Class of 1980, held its first meeting of the year on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
The gathering was aimed at discussing key issues, including preparations for the 50th anniversary celebration of their admission into St. Augustine’s College as freshmen (Greenhorns).
The gathering took place at Cookers Delight in Kaneshie, Accra, a venue owned by the widow of their late classmate, George Brown (affectionately known as Koo Jacky), who tragically lost his life to armed robbers over a decade ago.
The group intentionally chose this venue as a way of supporting one of their own, in life or death. May his soul continue to rest in peace.
This year group, known for their exceptional camaraderie, first entered St. Augustine’s College on Thursday, September 18, 1975. They were warmly welcomed by the revered Mr. Samuel Seddoh, the then Headmaster.
As part of the Augusco tradition, at some point, they were initiated by Father Bacchus. The cohort shares countless fond memories of their time together.
Their golden jubilee celebration, slated for September this year, promises to be a grand occasion to be held in Cape Coast.
Key Decisions and Committees Formed
Several important decisions were made at the meeting. Notably, three committees were set up to ensure the success of the anniversary celebration:
• Programmes Committee: Chaired by Peter Raymond Zwennes
• Publicity Committee: Chaired by Peter Martey Agbeko
• History Committee: Chaired by Kodzo Chapman
• Finance Committee: Chaired by Isaac Owusu
The year group also confirmed plans to spend a few days in Cape Coast to mark the milestone in a memorable manner. Discussions about the group’s legacy project are ongoing, with final approval expected soon.
Additionally, the group resolved to be well-represented at the upcoming APSU National Awards Night, scheduled for Friday, February 21, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
Two members of the Class of 1980—Peter Raymond Zwennes and Peter Martey Agbeko—have been nominated for awards in recognition of their significant contributions to the development of their alma mater.
Attendance and Proceedings
The meeting was chaired by Charles Ebo Fabin, the President of the 1980 Year Group. Among the 21 attendees were notable members such as Dr. Ernest Anthony Osei, the APSU Global President, and Peter Raymond Zwennes, a member of the College’s Governing Board.
Despite the absence of live streaming due to technical issues, Fabin assured members who could not attend in person that minutes of the meeting would be shared shortly.
The meeting combined business with camaraderie, as is typical of this vibrant group. In keeping with tradition, the session ended with the singing of the school anthem, Mbo Augusten, evoking fond memories of their cherished time at St. Augustine’s College.
