For the first time since the inception of the Fourth Republic, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has claimed victory in the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat—an area long considered a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ewurabena Aubynn, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, narrowly edged out her main contender, Akua Afriyie of the NPP, in what turned out to be a fiercely competitive rerun. Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, surpassing Afriyie’s 33,881—a margin of just over 200 votes.
This landmark win came after a troubled initial election in December 2024, which was marred by violence at the collation centre.

The unrest interrupted the counting of ballots from 19 polling stations, triggering a lengthy legal and electoral standoff.
Following a High Court directive for the Electoral Commission (EC) to resolve the impasse, and amid heightened tensions and prolonged delays, the EC eventually chose to hold a rerun in the affected polling stations.
The result marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Ablekuma North and may signal a new chapter for the NDC in areas previously dominated by the NPP.
