International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Ministry of Employment and Labour have held a stakeholders validation meeting on the Ghana labour market information and skills anticipation system action plan.

The meeting which aimed at strengthening the labour market measures system in Ghana was supported by Skills Initiative For Africa with funding from European Union and GIZ saw industry players from key-related organisations validate the plan.

The Ghana Market Information System plan aimed at collecting data, processing data and sharing data so that job seekers look for jobs and employers can use the data for forecasting the kind of data they want, the kind of skills job seekers have

In short, is a way of housing data. Ghana is not the only country implementing this.

In an interview with the National project coordinator Skill-up Ghana, Frank Kwasi Adetor said the labour market information system when launched will seek to build the capacity of government agencies by enabling them to have a robust labour market system in the country.

Adding that, ILO is fully committed to working with the ministry of employment and labour relations to bring sanity to the field of work.

“This program has 4 components but the ILO is implementing the component which seeks to build the capacity of government agencies to be able to have a very robust Labour market formation system in the country. There is a program supported by the world bank which is the skill for job project which is ready to provide hardware talking about the computers and equipment that we will need to be able to set up the system across the country.

What we are doing as ILO is to work with the ministry of employment and labour relations to support the data collection because one of the key recommendation plans is to make sure that we have been able to collect reliable data that will be fed into the system”, he said

Dr Alexander Preko, a Private Consultant from the University of Professional Studies emphasised that the content of the validation action plan makes the plan unique from already existing ones, hence the system will be launched in March 2022.

“The action plan basically looked at the areas to focus on. The action plan focuses on the country’s robust labour market information system, although we have information on labour it has scattered. We want to have a centralised system where the ministry of employment and labour relations will have a portal that job seekers and employers will visit.

When the system is officially launched, it will enable employers in the country to have access to a template that will help them collect data”, he explained.
