THE MAYOR of Kumasi, Hon Samuel Pyne Saturday morning led a six-hour clean up exercise in the Central Business District (CBD) of the Metropolis.

Wearing a light green t-shirt on a yellow reflector over black shorts with a black cap and black boots to match, the Mayor accompanied by some staff of the Assembly and some social fun clubs cleaned and cleared filth in Dr. Mensah, Adum, Pampaso, Aboabo, and Bantama streets.

The team also desilted some choked gutters at the new Kejetia as well as the Racecourse markets.

Holding a shovel and actively participating in the exercise, the Mayor told newsmen that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly intends to sustain the exercise.

Details:

The Mayor stressed that the KMA was determined to stem the untidy conditions on the streets and markets across the metropolis.

He noted that to deal with the unsanitary conditions, the Assembly would be constructing four compost sites across the metropolis and would also place at vantage points large bins which would collect both soft and hard substances of waste.

The waste, the Mayor disclosed would be recycled at the Compost sites into fertilizer.

The Mayor also revealed that the project would be rolled out in November having secured a 2.5million euros partnership deal from the European Union through a three-city project which has Valencia, Praia, and KMA benefiting.

“We plan to roll out this waste management and sanitation project by November as we begin sensitization from now and this would see Kumasi becoming clean as we deal properly with our waste”, Hon Pyne stated.

Appeal:

The Mayor appealed to residents to show interest in the clean-up exercise KMA has started embarking upon.

He was sad that many had complied with the directive to close their shops from 6am to Midday but were idling around without participating in the actual clean up exercise.

The Mayor noted that the KMA was currently collaborating with the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to fish out those who litter the metropolis day and night.

“We have staff in the video room of the National Investigation Bureau and we would soon fish out those who litter the metropolis and deal with them according to the law so that it serves as a deterrent to residents of Kumasi”, the Mayor warned.
