The police has restored calm on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology following violent clashes between students of the University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Continental) of the University on Thursday night (18 August 2022) in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

The police, in a statement, said it is in “firm control of the situation” and an investigation is ongoing to arrest those behind “this unfortunate, needless and unjustifiable attacks and bring them to face justice”.

“We, therefore, urge all law-biding members of the university community to remain calm and support the police as we deal with the situation”, the statement said.

Several cars were vandalised by the students in the clash.

Witnesses say the clash was sparked by a misunderstanding that ensued as students of Unity Hall tried preventing their colleagues from University Hall from passing in front of their residence during a Zulu procession held as part of their hall week celebration.

Two weeks ago, there were similar clashes between residential students of the Commonwealth Hall (Vandals) and Mensah Sarbah Hall (Vikings) of the University of Ghana that led to the setting ablaze of a car parked within the premises of the latter hall on campus.
