The President of Women in Mining Ghana, (WIM) Georget Bee Sakyi Addo is advocating for more women to engage in mining.

Addressing a media workshop dubbed “Gender Mainstreaming in the Mining Industry,’ West African and experience sharing, Georget mentioned that the immense contributions of women in the socio-economic development of nations should be acknowledged and supported especially in the field of mining.

She said though there is no gender pay gap inequalities in the field of women in mining rather socio-cultural diversity mostly influences decisions thus women lagging behind in the mining sector.

According to her, the needed funding support should be given to women who are into mining to empower them to be more independent.

Touching on illegal mining, the President mentioned that though Women in Mining Ghana has not been actively involved in the fight against galamsey, active measures are being put in place to ensure that women who engage themselves in mining will all have legal means to operate in order to make their work meaningful.

National Women’s Coordinator of the Ghana Association of Small Scale Miners,(NASSM) Victoria Addobea Guerrieri added her voice, saying that there is a need for financial support to equip women to own minable lands to enable them to work diligently and be more independent.

Throwing more light, she said, most women who are involved in mining are not well equipped materially thus leaving them in danger in the field of work.

She, therefore, called on stakeholders to support financially to make women in mining more attractive.
