A majority of Germans expect gas to be in short supply this or next winter, according to a YouGov survey.
In the poll commissioned by dpa, 29% said they expected gas to be scarce this winter already. Some 26% do not expect a shortage until 2023/24.
Of the more than 2,000 people questioned, 29% said they believed that gas supplies would be secure through both winters.
In the course of the Russian war against Ukraine, gas supplies from Russia – which accounted for 55% of German consumption before the conflict – were completely stopped.
This led to a major drive by the German government to fill up the country’s gas storage sites from other suppliers ahead of winter.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly stated that gas supplies for this winter are secure.
In a recent interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, he said supplies would also be secure for the winter of 2023/24 “if nothing unforeseen happens.”
