A total of 1,147 students, including 7 PhDs, 103 master’s degrees, and 1,037 undergraduate degrees and diplomas have graduated from the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU).

They received their degrees in various disciplines on Saturday 29th July 2023 during the 31st Congregation Ceremony of the GCTU in Accra.

The ceremony marked the school’s 31st congregation as a university but the 3rd since becoming a public university in 2020.

The ceremony had in attendance parents, guardians, and families of the graduates as well as council members among others.

In an address delivered by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa at the ceremony, he indicated that GCTU has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of education in Ghana.

“Our journey as GCTU is only three years old but our history and impact goes further than that. In the year 2020, through an Act of Parliament, GCTU was granted the status of a public university with a specific mandate to specialize in the training of students in the field of technology and engineering.

….This development marked a significant turning point in the university’s journey, opening new doors of opportunity for both faculty and students alike”.

He said, despite the limitation of land space on the campus, they are determined to be the Technology Hub University in Ghana.

“As part of our mandate given by the parliament to ensure that we become the ICT university in ghana. “We are concentrating our strength to ensure that we widen our program based on ICT. So we have programs in ICT, Information Technology, Computer Engineering Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Cyber Security (diploma and BSc levels) among others.”

He stressed that the school is not interested in veering into other areas of programs.

“We are an ICT university and virtually we want to ensure that we are over 90% ICT and all our programs are STEM-based so that we will be able to produce graduates that will go out there and become job producers, entrepreneurs, innovators, creators that will be solution bearers for ghana when it comes to the area of ICT.”

He commended and encouraged the graduates to make the university proud.

Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa further seized the opportunity to appeal to the government to support the school with infrastructure so the school can build the Silicon Valley they desire in the interest of the growth and development of Ghana.

Mr Samuel Dubik Mahama (Esq) Managing Director, Electricity Company of Ghana Limited was the Guest of Honour.

In his address, he emphasised that the event was to ensure that the graduates go out to the world of work and apply the knowledge they have acquired.

He advised them to follow excellent work ethics and moral principles, and have perseverance as they advance to the next chapter of life.

He further urged them to be driven by their visions, learn continuously, be patient and humble, value networking, and continuously serve others.

Miss Sussana Frimpong, BSc. Accounting in her Valedictorian speech lauded the school and everybody that supported and guided them throughout their journey in the school.
