The Canal France International (CFI), in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has launched the project “Equal Voices,” to support gender equality in the media which aims to promote, a better representation of women, as experts and agents of change.
Key Speaker, Ace Journalist Ohene Yere Gifty Anti, the Executive Director of GDA Media Limited also a gender advocate, emphasized that intimidation of women in various media houses especially in the newsrooms should be critically examined.
She expressed worry about low self-esteem among Ghanaian women, not being able to stand and defend themselves in the media space when being frightened to submission.
According to her, women are not even being considered in democratic governance, especially in Ghana, which is a critical issue to worry about, she added.
“We have to dare speak up and make our voices be counted,” she urged.
Dr. Charity Binka, Executive Director of Media and Change (WOMEC), added her voice that Gender Equality cannot be attained without equal votes.
“The world would be more peaceful if structural inequalities were addressed and women were allowed to contribute to development equally,” she said.
The Executive Director for MFWA, Suleimana Braimah at the launch revealed that for the media to ensure gender equality, the charity must begin at home.
According to him, the media must mainstream women’s empowerment in the newsroom of various media houses.
MFWA is a regional independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Accra and was founded in 1997 to defend and promote the rights and freedom of the media and expression.
