Asante Kotoko played a good game to win the first edition of the Democracy Cup 2-1 against arch rivals Hearts of Oak on Wednesday, July 17 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Intelligent Justice Blay got the opening goal through a spot kick for Kotoko after 30 minutes of play. The defensive midfielder converted a beautiful kick from the penalty spot.

Kotoko were on top and should have had more in the opening half but settled for just one goal as the first half came to an end.

After half time, Hearts equalized through new star Asamoah Boateng and looked to be winning but they kept on playing the ball backwards instead of going forward..

Winger Amidu restored Kotoko’s lead in the latter stages of the game.

The Porcupine Warriors from Kumasi run away with the win, sealing their third victory of the 2023/24 season over the Phobians after home and aways wins in the GPL.

Also the victory will take Asante Kotoko to the USA to play DC United in a friendly game.

The match was organised by PrimeVal Consult with the support of the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, Chief Justice and the IGP as well as the Presidency.

It attracted a lot of sponsorship from companies and the media to ensure that the nation goes through the next general elections peacefully.

In the curtain raiser, the MPs team beat the former Black Stars/Ex professional players 3-1.
