With less than three weeks to the general presidential and parliamentary elections, NDC Stalwart Oscar Komla Bedzra has advised Ghanians, most especially faith -based organizations in Ghana to punish the ruling New Patriotic Party over what he described as ‘an intentional move by delay tactics’ not to pass the ANTI- LGBTQI+ Bill.
MPs who sponsored the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana’s Parliament include Sam Nartey George, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah of Ho West, Della Adjoa Sowah
Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini (Tamale North), Helen Adjoa Ntoso, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, La Dadekotopon, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor of South Dayi and John Ntim Fordjour, Assin South.
This bill was passed by Parliament of Ghana on February 28th 2024 and named as ‘Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2021’ and later transmitted to president Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo .
However, this bill has been met with some criticisms from some civil society organizations challenging the contents of the bill, alongside some punitive measures as enshrined therein.
In an interaction with some voters in Suame Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Oscar Bedzra urged them to reject the NPP for not passing this controversial ANTI- LGBTQ+ bill since it’s passage by Parliament in February 2024. “..why should a government that claims to believe in moral values be the same government delaying passage of this important bill seeking to promote morality..?”- Mr Bedzra questioned.
“In any other country like the United States did quite recently during their general elections, this government should have been outrightly voted against on December 7th which is less than three weeks away from now and I urge the faith -based organisations to punish the NPP over their unwillingness to pass this bill”, Mr. Bedzra added.
