The Media Coalition, comprising the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and New Media Association of Ghana (NMAG), has strongly criticized the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to restrict media access to the National Collation Centre during the December 7 general elections.
In a statement, the Coalition expressed concerns over the EC’s plan to issue accreditation to selected media houses and journalists, a move they believe undermines the principles of transparency and fairness.
They emphasized that the lack of a clear and transparent selection methodology poses a threat to the integrity of the electoral process.
The Coalition disclosed that it was neither consulted nor informed prior to the EC’s decision, describing it as a betrayal of the good faith and working relationship between the media and the Commission.
They also criticized the EC for relying on advice from individuals who allegedly do not represent the interests of the broader media landscape.
Highlighting the risks of misinformation and disinformation, the Coalition warned that this restrictive decision could undo the progress made toward ensuring credible elections.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting successful elections but cautioned against actions that could compromise the democratic process.
The Media Coalition plans to hold a press conference to address this issue in greater detail and urged the EC to rescind its decision in the interest of media equity and national transparency.
