NPP GERMANY Tackles Ablakwa’s Presidential Jet Hypocrisy
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has once again taken to his usual self-congratulatory rhetoric, touting his so-called “legacy” of opposing presidential travels on chartered flights.
In a recent post on his Facebook page titled “The Presidential Jet Debate — My Proud Legacy for God and Country”, Ablakwa goes to great lengths to paint himself as a principled patriot who stood tall in defense of the public purse.
But strip away the verbose justifications and selective history, and what emerges is the sheer double standards of a man who weaponized presidential travels for partisan gain while in opposition, only to now find himself complicit in the very recklessness he once decried.
Then in Opposition: The Crusader Against Chartered Flights
Between 2021 and 2024, Ablakwa turned Ghana’s presidential travels into a political circus.
He built his entire opposition brand around demonizing then-President Akufo-Addo for opting for chartered jets, conveniently ignoring the complex realities of presidential security and diplomacy.
At the time, he insisted the existing Presidential Jet was perfectly fit for purpose. He berated Akufo-Addo for spending taxpayers’ money on charters, accusing him of wastefulness, arrogance, and profligacy.
Ablakwa became the loudest voice calling for frugality in the name of “protecting the public purse.”
Now in Government: Suddenly Comfortable on Commercial Flights
Fast forward to today. Ablakwa now serves as Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister under President John Mahama.
Ironically, this same man who once claimed the Presidential Jet was “pristine and airworthy” now boards commercial flights with the President, exposing the Commander-in-Chief of the Republic to the very risks of security compromise he once ignored.
The man who argued tirelessly that no President should charter aircraft because the state already had a jet now seems perfectly at peace when the President of Ghana risks his life traveling on ordinary commercial flights.
Where is the same fire, the same indignation, the same so-called “patriotism” he claimed guided his opposition days?
A Case of Political Convenience
Ablakwa’s hypocrisy is glaring. His “principled stance” was never about patriotism — it was pure political expediency. When it suited his partisan agenda, he vilified Akufo-Addo for using chartered jets.
Now that he is in government, he has chosen silence as President Mahama’s security is compromised in commercial travel arrangements.
One cannot help but ask: if Ablakwa truly believed the Presidential Jet was fit for purpose, why is President Mahama not using it now?
Why is Ablakwa, the self-proclaimed guardian of the public purse, quiet about this dangerous and reckless arrangement?
The Danger of Selective Principles
Ablakwa wants Ghanaians to see him as a principled statesman. But in reality, he is the very embodiment of the double standards and dishonesty that have plagued Ghanaian politics.
He opposed Akufo-Addo not out of principle, but out of politics. He grandstands about patriotism only when it is convenient.
If Ablakwa was genuine in his claims, he should be leading the charge today against President Mahama’s decision to endanger Ghana’s presidency with commercial flights. Instead, he has chosen the path of silence and complicity — a betrayal of the very values he claimed to uphold.
Conclusion
Okudzeto Ablakwa’s record on the presidential jet debate is not a proud legacy — it is a legacy of opportunism, selective outrage, and political hypocrisy. His conduct proves that his so-called fight for “God and Country” was never about principle but about power.
Ghanaians deserve leaders who will speak truth to power whether in opposition or in government.
Unfortunately, Ablakwa has shown he is not one of them.
God Bless Our Homeland Ghana!!!
Long Live Ghana, long live the Elephant Party!!!!
