Mr. Abdul Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager Commercial MTN Mobile Money has emphasized the importance of educating customers on fraud prevention and the need for a grassroots approach to reach a wider audience.
Speaking at the MTN’s “Shine Your Eye” MoMo fraud education campaign held at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025, Mr. Rufai highlighted the key messages that customers and market women need to know to safeguard themselves against fraud and scams.
“The “Shine Your Eye” initiative is a comprehensive program designed to educate customers on how to protect themselves from fraud.
The program involves taking the education to local communities, with a team spread across the country, to reach a wider audience.
The team uses drama skits to demonstrate how fraudsters operate and how customers can protect themselves”. He said.
According to Mr. Rufai, one of the most important messages customers need to know is that nobody from MTN will call them without using the number 0244-300000.
He also emphasized that MTN staff will never ask customers for their PIN or priority information.
“There is nobody from MTN that will call you without using the number 0244-300000,” he stated. “When the MTN number calls you also, the 0244300000, nobody will ask your priority or your pin.” He said briefly.

The initiative also warns customers about scams related to promotions, where fraudsters claim that customers need to pay money to redeem prizes.
Mr. Rufai advised customers to be cautious of such scams and to report any suspicious activity to MTN.
To safeguard customers, Mr. Rufai outlined three golden rules: do not share your PIN, do not allow anyone to do transactions on your behalf, and do not approve any prompts or transactions you have not initiated.
“Do not share your PIN. Do not allow anybody to do transaction on your behalf, because when you do that, you are giving the person your PIN,” he cautioned. “And do not approve any prompts or anything you have not initiated.”
Mr. Rufai assured customers that MTN is committed to safeguarding their security, stating that the company is blocking millions of SMS that target customers.
“We are blocking millions of SMS that target customers. That is our promise, to safeguard our customers.” He assured.
The “Shine Your Eye” initiative is a timely intervention, given the increasing sophistication of fraudsters and the growing number of mobile money transactions in the country.
In an interaction with some market women and customers, they shared their thoughts about the initiative.
“The work MTN is doing is good for us, we are happy about the education. But these days people do fraud a lot so this one is going to help us report and block and unscrupulous attempt on our momo”. One said.
