Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 presidential race, following a decisive victory in the party’s nationwide primaries.

Dr. Bawumia emerged on top after a competitive contest involving five aspirants, polling 56.48 per cent of the valid votes cast to secure an outright win in the first round.

His performance placed him comfortably ahead of his closest rivals, making a run-off unnecessary under party regulations.

The internal election was conducted across 333 voting centres nationwide, with more than 200,000 delegates participating from all 16 regions of the country.

The scale of the exercise marked one of the most extensive internal elections in the party’s history.

Certified results released by the Electoral Commission showed that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent.

He was followed by Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who garnered 36,303 votes, equivalent to 18.53 per cent. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong trailed with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent) and 402 votes (0.20 per cent) respectively.

In total, 195,901 valid votes were recorded, with 561 ballots rejected, bringing the overall number of votes cast to 196,462.

According to the NPP’s constitution, a presidential aspirant must obtain more than half of all valid votes to be declared winner. Dr. Bawumia’s vote share exceeded this benchmark, confirming his nomination without the need for a second round.

With the primaries concluded, the former Vice President now takes on the task of leading the NPP into the 2028 general elections, which are scheduled for three years’ time.
