The Ghana Reads Initiative (GRI), in collaboration with the Educational Times Newspaper, has called for decisive national action to address systemic challenges highlighted by the 2025 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
The call was made at the end of a high-level education dialogue held on Monday, January 26, 2026, at the Ghana Library Authority in Accra under the theme “The Uninspiring 2025 WASSCE Results and Suggestions for Rectification.”
The dialogue brought together representatives from civil society, the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, education stakeholders, parents, and students.
Participants agreed that the 2025 WASSCE outcomes should be treated as a national learning alarm rather than a narrative of blame.
Discussions identified key concerns, including weak foundational learning, declining student discipline, teacher motivation challenges, assessment–curriculum misalignment, examination malpractice, inadequate use of WAEC data for remediation, and weak academic and career guidance systems.
Stakeholders proposed priority actions, including institutionalising post-WASSCE diagnostic reviews, implementing targeted remedial programmes in core subjects, improving teacher motivation and professional development, strengthening school discipline and parental engagement, reforming assessment and progression systems, and enhancing examination integrity and accountability mechanisms.
The dialogue emphasized the need for coordinated leadership from government, active participation of education agencies, and sustained collaboration among schools, parents, and communities to restore confidence in Ghana’s education and assessment systems.
GRI and Educational Times reaffirmed their commitment to supporting national education reforms through research, advocacy, and evidence-based policy engagement.
