Labour Strike

The Strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana, UTAG has been declared unlawful.

This follows January 13, 2022 meeting with representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Employment and Labour Relations as well as the National Labour Commission and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

The National Secretary of UTAG, Dr. Asare Asante-Annor in an interview with GBC News was however tight-lipped over reports that members of UTAG who took active part in the strike which has been declared unlawful will not lose their salaries for January as a result.

He told Nathaniel Nartey that the leadership of UTAG is assessing the situation, while it takes steps to inform members of the outcome of the meeting.

“We met yesterday at the National Labour Commission and UTAG made a strong for our strike action but the conclusion from the Chairman is that the strike declared by UTAG was illegal so as the next point of action, the leadership of UTAG is currently taking steps to inform the branches of the ruling of the National Labour Commission”.

It is unclear if the strike by UTAG is still in force or not. Dr. Asante Annor asked students to be patient while they engage stakeholders on the issue.

”The grievances of UTAG have not been settled so we want to tell our students to be patient while we inform our members of the decision by the NLA”.
