The President of the Network of Professional Women in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WiWASH), Faustina Boachie, has called on all to support women to progress in their endeavours and not be intimidated by their rise.
Ms. Boachie made this statement during an event held at the Ghana Water Company Limited Head Office on March 8, 2022, to commemorate International Women’s Day.
The WiWASH President encouraged both men and women to play a role in forging for gender parity since its ultimate purpose was to foster an inclusive, innovative and creative workplace for all.
The event, which was organised by WiWASH, opened conversations on how biases against women at the workplace could be eliminated to enhance women’s forward movement.
In a keynote address, the Guest of Honour for the event, Dr. Margaret Macauley, said that everyone has some biases, conscious and unconscious ones.
He, therefore, urged all to work toward understanding their conscious and unconscious biases, and change their behaviour to allow inclusivity at the workplace.
Dr. Macauley advised women, particularly those starting their careers to be more ambitious, persevere and be unique wherever they found themselves. She encouraged all women to work hard to defeat the odds but keep their heads up even when they fail. “Excellence is the best way to defeat sexism but don’t fear failure”, she advised.
Dr. Macauley also said that networking among women was critical for their growth as it could provide opportunities for learning and exchange of ideas. She therefore urged all women to network and have a united front.
Other dignitaries at the event included Dr. Remy Puoru – Deputy Managing Director for Finance and Administration; Cynthia Ackah – Chief Manager, Commercial; Engineer Botse-Baidoo – Chief Manager for Corporate Planning; and Eva Ankrah – Chief Manager for Human Resources.
The dignitaries took turns to share personal experiences on how they dealt with biases and advised the women on how they can progress in their fields of endeavour. They also informed participants about the policy direction of the Company to ensure a more gender-friendly environment for all.
