Addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony in Accra, Mrs. Pamela Kormelo, Managing Director, Omni Group of Companies said, since the upsurge of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana, the company has played a pivotal role in the fight against the spread of the virus across the country by introducing PCR and Antigen Testing to expand Ghana’s testing capacity, providing fast, accurate and timely results for patient management, and engaging with other stakeholders in COVID-19 research and prevention activities to seek lasting solutions.

“The facility is well equipped with modern laboratory equipment and the world’s leading manufacturers has employed the services of highly qualified health professionals to provide professional services to their clients. Diagnostics contribute to 70 per cent of medical decisions globally because reliable and timing laboratory diagnostics play a significant role in the treatment of patients,” she noted.

Speaking in an interview with the media Dr. Yvonne Dei-Adomakoh, Director of the Haematology Department at the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics (Adult Sickle Cell Clinic) and Head of Haematology at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital said the country needs more private state-of-the-art laboratories.

“We have remote areas with no laboratory service at all so we need such laboratories to come up, all should not be consecrated in the capital rather go out and open smaller branches in all the districts”, she explained.

Speaking on the merits of Allergic Testing, she said every individual is allergic to something hence it is very important for everyone to know his or her haematology

Adding that a lot of education must be done for the citizenry to understand the importance of allergy testing, Haematological testing and Microbiology testing.

“We need education, I think that any patient who thinks that they feel unwell must see a specialist in that area to attend to you and request the relevant laboratory test. People have allergies to various things.

You can eat a meal now and then suddenly break out having a lot of rushes, feel unwell suddenly start having difficulty in breathing, so when you experienced something like that you must seek medical advance.

One must know the merit of going for haematology, and what are the advantages of going for a  test like that. So we need to do a lot of education out there for people to know it is a very simple test, it just an idea of your sickle status then you can make a decision when you decide to get married”.

She further emphasised that Ghana needs genetic counsellors to help in that regard.

“Currently, we don’t have genetic counsellors but we have West Africa Genetic Medicine Centre that has been set up at the University of Ghana and they aim to train genetic counsellors for the country”, she stated.
