The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on striking Teacher Unions to reconsider their strike and return to the classroom.

The teacher unions are protesting the appointment of an acting Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Dr. Eric Nkansah.

The striking unions which include the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) argue that Dr Nkansah is a banker and not a teacher and hence does not merit the position.

NUGS, however, in a statement wants the teachers to reconsider their strike action and pursue other means of expressing their dissent, holding that the strike action turns students into victims of actions they have no control over.

Meanwhile, the leadership of striking teacher unions and their employees will today, Wednesday, 9 November 2022, appear before the National Labour Commission (NLC) over the impasse on the appointment of Dr. Nkansah.

The meeting follows the Employment and Labour Ministry’s letter to the NLC for intervention following two unsuccessful meetings with the teachers to address their concerns.
