Dambai, July 30, 2024—During a recent 2024 NCCE Oti Regional Debate contest, students from Krachi Senior High, Nkwanta Senior High, and Yabram Community Day Senior High presented a compelling case for amending the constitution to reduce the powers of the President of Ghana.
The event, sponsored by Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC, brought together eight schools to debate on democratic issues and compete for honors.
The students argued that the President’s power to appoint judges, heads of independent institutions, and the Inspector General of Police compromises neutrality and creates allegiance to the executive.
They proposed that these appointments be taken away from the President to ensure true independence.
Furthermore, the students advocated for a constitutional review to prevent the President from selecting ministers from Parliament, promoting the principle of separation of powers and enhancing democratic accountability.
The contest was structured into three levels. Level one saw schools make presentations on Child Alcoholism and constitutional review, where students showcased their knowledge and critical thinking skills.
Levels two and three featured debates on various democratic topics, where students engaged in intense discussions and arguments.
At the end of the contest, Likpe Senior High emerged as the winner, followed by Krachi Senior High, Bueman Senior High, and Nkwanta Senior High.
Other participating schools included Yabram Community Day Senior High, St. Theresa Vocational Technical, and Oti Senior High schools.
This annual competition provides a platform for the youth to engage with democratic issues and advocate for positive change.
The students’ proposals for constitutional reform demonstrate their commitment to strengthening Ghana’s democratic processes and ensuring accountability in governance.
