Scrapping Fuel Allowances For Political Appointees Exposes John Mahama’s Hollow Populism, Greed And Hypocrisy—NPP GERMANY
The recent announcement by the NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama to scrap fuel allowances for political appointees has been touted as a bold cost-saving measure.
But to NPP GERMANY, this is nothing more than shallow populism meant to deceive the public while the real hemorrhage of state resources continues behind the Scenes. Let’s not be fooled at all!!!
This move, framed as a noble sacrifice, is a desperate PR stunt that fails to address the true rot at the heart of Ghana’s public sector expenditure: the obscene and unjustifiable remuneration packages of Article 71 office holders and political appointees.
In fact, while the fuel allowance cut makes headlines, the actual cost to the taxpayer continues to balloon under layers of extravagant benefits, luxury perks, and self-serving contracts that put the personal comfort of political elites far above the needs of the ordinary Ghanaian.
Take, for instance, the shocking appointment terms of Mr. Samuel Gyamfi, better known as Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, who has been quietly rewarded with the position of Chief Executive Officer of Ghana GoldBod Ltd.
His compensation package reads like a royal decree, not the terms of public service in a struggling economy.
Here are just a few highlights of what Sammy Gyamfi enjoys — courtesy of the taxpayer:
- A whopping GHS 1.5 million basic annual salary, with a guaranteed 15% upward adjustment every year — regardless of performance.
- Clothing allowance equal to 15% of his already bloated salary.
- Two personal security officers or a juicy cash alternative of GHS 6,000 each.
- A full-time gardener or a GHS 4,000 cash option — as though he’s royalty.
- Luxury medical cover for himself, his spouse, and up to five children — up to age 22 if unemployed.
- Two fully maintained Toyota Land Cruiser V8s, with 1,500 litres of fuel monthly for each car.
- An annual “familiarisation tour” of USD 10,000 in airfare, plus a scandalous USD 14,000 per diem for a 7-day vacation that is counted as “work.”
- Business class travel plus USD 2,000 per day for any international trip.
- A personal accident and life insurance policy worth five times his salary.
- A bonus system and extra benefits clause ensuring that any perk not listed is paid “at prevailing CEO rate plus 20%.”
So, while President Mahama parades the removal of a relatively minor fuel allowance as a responsible economic reform, his government is handing out Versailles-style compensation packages to loyal party boys like Gyamfi.
Let’s put this in plain terms: 1,500 litres of fuel per car for two vehicles means 3,000 litres of free fuel every month for one man, while the average Ghanaian struggles to buy 3 litres for a trip to work. This is not just hypocritical; it is immoral.
It is now clear that the NDC’s entire campaign against the NPP — built on cries of corruption, waste, and mismanagement — was never about saving Ghana.
It was about clearing the way for their own feeding frenzy. And as soon as they got into power, the same Sammy Gyamfi who used to thunder against “reckless governance” is now the pampered emperor of a gold-backed empire with benefits that would make a Fortune 500 CEO envious.
Let’s also not forget that Article 71 office holders continue to enjoy state-sponsored opulence that dwarfs any tokenistic cuts.
These include ex-gratia payments, accommodation, travel, health insurance, clothing, per diems, and more — all layered into a system designed to reward political loyalty, not merit or public service.
What This Means for Ghana
This is not governance. This is state capture.
The removal of fuel allowances is a drop in the ocean compared to the tsunami of waste still flooding our national finances. And it is insulting for any government — especially one that claims to care for the poor — to act as though it’s solving economic hardship while lavishly rewarding its own cronies.
If President Mahama is truly serious about cutting costs and restoring fiscal discipline, then let him start by dismantling the bloated emolument structure for political appointees, dissolve unjustified CEO appointments for party communicators, and demand transparency and public accountability in all such contracts.
Until then, his so-called reforms remain nothing more than window dressing for a castle of corruption.
Ghanaians must open their eyes. The real enemy of national progress is not the fuel allowance — it is the entire elite architecture of entitlement that is draining the state dry while offering nothing but hardship in return.
No amount of populist noise can cover up this betrayal.
