Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana's Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament has rejected suggestions that he is conniving with the Minority to frustrate government business in the House.

Deputy Majority Leader Alex Afenyo-Markin and other leading members of the Majority have variously accused the Speaker of deliberately obstructing government business.

The Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu at a press briefing on December 23, 2021, also made similar insinuations.

Addressing a forum of former MPs, Mr. Bagbin said he is not in any way obstructing government business.

He, however, insisted that he will not allow himself to be used to do the bidding of the Executive at the expense of Parliament.

On events on the floor and the Chaos by MPs, where he was accused of missing from Parliament, Mr. Bagbin explained that he had been in the House since morning for the sole purpose of superintending over the E. Levy Bill, however, the leadership of government business in Parliament failed to bring the Bill for consideration, until such a time that he was tired and had to leave the Chair for the First Deputy Speaker.
