Stress

Stress is generally defined as the inability of one to cope with mental or emotional disorders such as death, debt, divorce, being demoted or fired from work or contracting a deadly disease.

It is important to note that the human body has been equipped to handle stress and hence, it is very important that when faced with a stressful situation, ”you must find ways and means to manage it so as not to overwhelm you”.

GTV Breakfast Show Host Kafui Dey and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Brain Clinic, Dr. Yao Mfodwo got interactive on the subject, ”Stress and stroke”.

Dr. Mfodwo indicated that when a person’s stress level is not well managed, it could bring about many health complications and therefore urged the public to desist from any stress-related activities such as poor diet, irregular exercise, the excess use of food supplements just to mention but a few. He added that there is a thin line between overwhelming stress and stroke, in that when the stress level of a person is through the roof and not curtailed at the earliest, that person will be predisposed to having a stroke.

Dr Mfodwo suggested that some of the best remedies to handle stress is to either, ”walk away from the situation or take in deep breaths both in and out to better ascertain and handle the situation”.

According to him, the consumption of alcohol helps some people to relax even though it is not the absolute best option because, ”the alcohol will further stress you out by giving you high blood pressure”, he posited.
