The Persecution Of Lord Commey: A Dangerous Political Precedent—NPP GERMANY
In recent weeks, Ghana has witnessed a troubling escalation in the use of state security apparatus under the NDC for what appears to be politically motivated attacks and witch-hunting.
The relentless targeting of former NPP government official Lord Commey is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by a system that weaponizes national security for partisan purposes.
These raids, harassment, and attempts to criminalize political opponents not only erode democracy but also set a dangerous precedent that could backfire in the future.
History has shown that regimes that weaponize security forces against political opponents often face the same fate when the tables turn.
If those in power today believe they are setting a precedent to protect themselves, they are mistaken.
What they are nurturing is a political time bomb that could explode in their faces tomorrow.
A Clear Case of Political Persecution
Lord Commey, a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a former Director of Operations at the Presidency, has been subjected to a series of security raids that bear the hallmarks of political persecution under this new NDC John Mahama administration, rather than legitimate law enforcement.
These actions are disturbingly reminiscent of past authoritarian tactics where national security forces were used to silence and intimidate opposition figures.
If there were genuine legal concerns about Lord Commey, due process should have been followed—transparent investigations, fair trials, and evidence-based prosecution.
Instead, what we are witnessing is a calculated effort to tarnish his reputation, instill fear, and send a chilling message to others who served under the previous administration.
Weaponizing National Security: A Threat to Democracy
The role of national security agencies should be to protect citizens, safeguard national interests, and ensure law and order— not to serve as an extension of a political party’s agenda.
By using security forces to raid the homes and offices of political opponents without clear legal justification, the government is not only undermining public trust but also dismantling the very pillars of democracy.
Ghana has long been hailed as a beacon of democracy in Africa, but these developments threaten to drag us back to an era of political vindictiveness.
If unchecked, such abuses of power could become the norm, leading to a cycle of political revenge whenever there is a change in government.
This is not just an attack on Lord Commey; it is an attack on the principles of justice, fairness, and good governance.
The Silence of Civil Society and Media Must End
One of the most concerning aspects of this situation is the relative silence from civil society organizations, media watchdogs, and international human rights groups.
The same voices that loudly condemned similar abuses in the past must rise to the occasion now.
Selective outrage undermines the credibility of those who claim to stand for democracy and human rights.
Ghanaians must reject any attempt to normalize political persecution. The media must demand accountability from those in power, and civil society must mobilize to ensure that no individual—regardless of political affiliation—is unjustly targeted.
The rule of law must apply equally to all, and political leaders must be held accountable through legitimate democratic processes, not security crackdowns.
A Call for Justice and Restraint
The government must immediately halt these politically motivated raids and allow legal institutions to operate independently.
If Lord Commey or any other official is suspected of wrongdoing, let the courts decide—through a fair, transparent, and impartial process. Anything short of that is an abuse of power that endangers Ghana’s democratic stability.
Ghana deserves better.
Our democracy must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency.
The persecution of Lord Commey must stop—before it is too late.
We Say KUDOS to Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia government!!!
