Disability Federation

Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) will mark the 2025 National Day for Persons with Disabilities today Monday, June 23, under the theme “Advancing Inclusive Education for All.”

GFD will also launch its first GFD Honours Event as part of the observance, under the theme “Celebrating Impact and Promoting Inclusion.”

The ceremony will bring together individuals, institutions, policymakers, and advocates who advance disability rights and inclusive education across Ghana.

Education Crisis Demands Action

Inclusive education remains a critical issue in Ghana’s development efforts. Despite national policies that promote access to education for all, many children and adults with disabilities face systemic challenges that prevent full participation in the educational system.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, over 2.1 million people in Ghana are persons with disabilities, nearly 20% have never attended school, and only 64% are currently enrolled. In contrast, the enrolment rate for children without disabilities stands at 81%.

Children with physical disabilities are particularly affected, with approximately 40% remaining out of school.

This year’s National Day for Persons with Disabilities seeks to raise awareness of these disparities and encourage policy actions that support inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all.

Awards to Recognise Disability Champions

GFD received over 70 nominations across 15 award categories. Nominees include youth advocates, institutions, media partners, and inclusive businesses.

A review committee conducted a comprehensive evaluation to select this year’s honorees.
