Ghana and India have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their longstanding diplomatic and development partnership, with renewed focus on cooperation in agriculture, the pharmaceutical sector, and information and communication technology (ICT), including emerging fields such as robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).
The renewed commitment was underscored when the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, received the Open Letters of the High Commissioner-Designate of the Republic of India to Ghana, His Excellency Surinder Bhagat, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra.
The presentation of the Open Letters marked the formal commencement of the High Commissioner-Designate’s diplomatic engagement with Ghana and reaffirmed the cordial relations that have existed between the two countries for decades.
Welcoming the Indian envoy, Hon. Ablakwa described the relationship between Ghana and India as one built on mutual respect, friendship and shared aspirations for development.
He said both nations have enjoyed fruitful cooperation over the years and expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to expand.
The Foreign Affairs Minister stressed that Ghana is committed to broadening bilateral cooperation in key sectors capable of driving economic transformation and improving the livelihoods of citizens in both countries.
He identified agriculture as one of the most strategic sectors for collaboration, noting that increased cooperation could boost food production, improve agricultural technology and strengthen value addition across the agricultural value chain.
The Minister also highlighted the pharmaceutical industry as an area with enormous potential, saying closer collaboration could support local pharmaceutical manufacturing, improve access to quality medicines and strengthen healthcare systems.
In the area of technology, Hon. Ablakwa said Ghana is eager to work more closely with India in advancing ICT, with particular emphasis on robotics and artificial intelligence to accelerate digital transformation and innovation.
“Ghana remains committed to deepening its longstanding partnership with India by expanding cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and ICT for the mutual benefit of our two countries,” the Minister stated.
He further observed that collaboration in these priority sectors would encourage innovation, promote skills development, facilitate technology transfer and create new economic opportunities for the youth.
According to the Minister, investments in modern technology and digital innovation are essential for sustainable development and will play a significant role in enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness in the global economy.
His Excellency Surinder Bhagat expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Ghana for the warm welcome extended to him upon assuming his diplomatic assignment.
The High Commissioner-Designate reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its longstanding partnership with Ghana and pledged to work diligently to deepen existing areas of cooperation.
“India values its enduring friendship with Ghana and remains committed to expanding cooperation in agriculture and other priority sectors that advance our shared interests,” H.E. Bhagat said.
He noted that his tenure would focus on identifying new opportunities for collaboration while consolidating existing partnerships that have yielded positive results over the years.
The Indian envoy also expressed his readiness to work closely with the Government of Ghana, relevant institutions and stakeholders to promote investment, knowledge exchange and sustainable development initiatives.
Both sides acknowledged that stronger bilateral cooperation would contribute significantly to economic growth, technological advancement and improved living standards in their respective countries.
The meeting also reflected the shared determination of Ghana and India to build stronger institutional ties and explore innovative solutions to common development challenges through strategic partnerships.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa congratulated His Excellency Surinder Bhagat on his appointment and wished him a successful and productive diplomatic tenure in Ghana.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stands ready to provide every necessary support to ensure the success of your diplomatic mission in Ghana,” the Minister assured the High Commissioner-Designate.
