Galamsey Mischief: NPP GERMANY Fully Backs Minerals Commission In Exposing Ablakwa Over Licensed Small-Scale Miners

NPP GERMANY wades into the current controversies on the mining front and takes this chance to further address a pressing issue that concerns the integrity of our nation, the protection of our natural resources, and the importance of truth in public discourse.

It is with pride and conviction that we stand in firm support of the Minerals Commission for its bold decision to bring clarity to the matters surrounding the issuance of mining licenses during the tenures of President John Dramani Mahama and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Over the past few days, there has been a wave of misinformation, accusations, and sensationalized claims by some individuals, notably Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, aimed at tarnishing the good image of the current administration.

We, as a party committed to transparency and accountability, are here to set the record straight.

In response to Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s claim that the government lacks commitment in the fight against galamsey, it is important to acknowledge that while challenges remain, the government has taken notable steps toward addressing illegal mining.

Initiatives such as Operation Vanguard, the deployment of military task forces, and the commissioning of regional and district-level task forces demonstrate a concerted effort.

Addressing an issue as deep-rooted and complex as galamsey requires a multi-faceted approach, including enforcement, education, and community engagement. Progress may be slow, but dismissing the government’s efforts as lacking commitment overlooks the strides made so far. Constructive engagement with all stakeholders is key to further progress, rather than dismissive criticisms.

The fight against galamsey demands collective responsibility, including political leaders from all sides, local communities, and the miners themselves.

If we are to tackle this environmental menace, we must work together, hold all actors accountable, and continue to refine our strategies to ensure lasting success.

The Facts

According to the Minerals Commission, a trusted state institution responsible for regulating Ghana’s mining sector, the numbers speak for themselves.

Between 2012 and 2016, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, a staggering 1,402 licenses were issued to small-scale miners.

This unprecedented number, over just four years, raises serious questions about the approach and rationale behind such extensive approvals.

In contrast, during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s eight-year tenure from 2017 to 2024, 1,014 licenses were issued.

This clearly demonstrates the current administration’s commitment to responsible and sustainable management of the country’s mineral resources.

Even over a longer period, the NPP government issued fewer licenses, showcasing a deliberate strategy to prevent over-exploitation and ensure that mining activities are conducted within the framework of national interests and environmental sustainability.

The Truth Exposed

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa has made it his mission to mislead the public with exaggerated claims and baseless allegations.

His attempts to paint the NPP government as reckless in the management of our natural resources are not only untrue but disrespectful to the hardworking Ghanaians who have witnessed the transformative policies implemented by this administration.

We are not surprised by his actions, as this is not the first time we have seen members of the opposition resort to such tactics.

Today, we celebrate the Minerals Commission for its courage and diligence in exposing these falsehoods.

Their release of accurate data has brought to light the truth that Ghana’s mining sector has been better regulated under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.

NPP’s Commitment to Responsible Governance

Ladies and gentlemen, let us be clear: the NPP government has always been guided by principles of responsible governance.

We have taken steps to tackle the illegal mining menace, popularly known as galamsey, while providing legitimate opportunities for small-scale miners to operate under lawful conditions.

The comparison between the 1,402 licenses issued under Mahama and the 1,014 licenses under President Akufo-Addo speaks volumes.

It shows the difference between a government that prioritized quantity over quality and one that prioritized the long-term wellbeing of our environment and people.

Under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, our fight against illegal mining has been robust, though not without its challenges.

We have introduced new regulations, empowered law enforcement agencies, and sought innovative ways to balance mining activities with environmental conservation.

As we move forward, we call on all Ghanaians to remain vigilant and discerning in the face of misinformation.

The facts presented by the Minerals Commission speak for themselves, and we, as a nation, must stand by the truth.

The NPP remains committed to the responsible stewardship of Ghana’s resources.

We will continue to support state institutions like the Minerals Commission, whose dedication to transparency helps protect our national assets and ensures that future generations inherit a Ghana that is stronger, greener, and more prosperous.

May God bless our nation, and may we continue to work together towards a brighter, more prosperous future.
