Over the weekend, the predominantly white flag of St. Augustine’s College (popularly known as Augusco), bearing its iconic emblem—a burning torch on a green and yellow shield—flew higher than ever as the school clinched a historic victory in the 8th edition of The Sharks competition. This marks Augusco’s first-ever win in the prestigious academic contest.
This landmark achievement is a testament to the school’s rising academic excellence and the enduring spirit behind its motto: Omnia Vincit Labor—Perseverance Conquers All.
A Battle of Brains and Breadth
Unlike the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), which focuses primarily on STEM disciplines, The Sharks competition spans four core areas: Literacy, Numeracy, Science, and Social Literacy. It is a rigorous tournament that demands not just sharp intellect, but a well-rounded worldview—making Augusco’s triumph all the more impressive.
Now in its eighth year, The Sharks has become one of Ghana’s most respected platforms for showcasing academic excellence. The competition brings together top-tier high schools in a thrilling contest of mental agility and cross-disciplinary knowledge.
Stepping Up, Rising High
Augusco’s breakthrough win in The Sharks follows its nail-biting performance in last year’s NSMQ, where the school narrowly missed the national title, losing by a single point to Mfantsipim School. That contest proved the Augustinians were once again among the academic elite—this Sharks win confirms it.
These achievements are no coincidence. They reflect the strategic leadership and renewed energy within the school, especially under the stewardship of the new Headmaster, Rev. Fr. Appiah, and his committed team of educators and staff. Together, they have reinvigorated the school’s vision of becoming a centre of excellence in Catholic education—forming intellectually equipped, morally grounded, and socially responsible young men for leadership in Ghana and beyond.
Kudos to the Champions
To the brilliant contestants, their dedicated academic coaches, and every teacher and staff member who supported the team—Ayekoo! Your victory is an inspiration to the entire Augusco community and a proud reminder of what disciplined effort and purpose-driven preparation can achieve. For winning the competition, the school was presented with a GH₵ 20,000 cheque.
The St. Augustine’s Past Students Union (APSU) is immensely proud of this milestone and remains steadfast in its support for the school’s quest for academic and moral excellence. With the next NSMQ just weeks away, spirits are high and hopes even higher. All eyes will once again turn to Cape Coast as the team gears up for another shot at glory.
The Journey Continues
As Augusco continues its upward trajectory—anchored in faith, tradition, and tireless dedication—one thing is clear: the flame of excellence burns ever brighter on the campus located along the Atlantic coastline in Cape Coast.
With every victory, whether by a single point or a commanding lead, the Augustinian legacy grows stronger.
