The vision of harnessing the immense potential of Ghanaians living abroad for national transformation took a significant step forward with the successful launch of Region 17 in Washington, D.C., United States, on July 30, 2026.
The landmark event brought together members of the Ghanaian diaspora, government officials, business leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs and development partners committed to strengthening Ghana’s economic future through diaspora engagement.
Held along Pennsylvania Avenue under the theme “Harnessing the Power of the Diaspora to Transform Ghana’s Future,” the event underscored the growing recognition of the Ghanaian diaspora as a strategic partner in national development and a vital contributor to Ghana’s economic, social and cultural advancement.
Region 17 has been conceived as an institutional platform that seeks to unite the intellectual, professional, entrepreneurial, financial and cultural resources of Ghanaians living across the world. The initiative aims to create structured opportunities for members of the diaspora to actively participate in nation-building while strengthening their ties with Ghana.
The launch attracted a distinguished gathering of policymakers, investors, business executives, professionals, innovators and members of the Ghanaian community in the United States, all united by a shared commitment to supporting Ghana’s long-term development agenda through meaningful collaboration.
Delivering the keynote address as the Special Guest Speaker, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith, praised the initiative as a timely intervention that aligns with Ghana’s aspirations of leveraging the skills, expertise and investments of its citizens abroad.
He encouraged Ghanaians in the diaspora to see themselves not merely as observers but as active partners in shaping the country’s future.
Also addressing participants was Presidential Advisor on the Economy, Mr. Seth Terkper, who emphasised the need for Ghana and the African continent to adopt innovative approaches to mobilising diaspora resources.
He noted that beyond remittances, the expertise, technology, investment capacity and global networks of Africans abroad remain invaluable assets capable of accelerating sustainable development.
Speakers throughout the programme stressed that Region 17 represents more than an organisation; it is a strategic movement designed to bridge geographical distances while fostering stronger partnerships between Ghana and its global citizens.
Participants agreed that the diaspora remains one of the country’s greatest untapped resources.
