The Metro Detroit Golden Gloves team from the USA arrived in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday evening for an international friendly boxing tournament against Ghana’s Black Bombers.
They were welcomed by First Vice-President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), Nii Gonti Adjor I, aka Nii Adama Addy, and former GBF President George Lamptey.
The show is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The event will feature 10 bouts involving 20 exciting boxers, as well as an exhibition involving juvenile boxers. Boxing fans in Accra are expected to turn up in their numbers to witness the action. In Accra, we say ‘Oobake’, meaning welcome, or ‘Akwaaba’ to the motherland.
“Ghana is the best place for our boxers to get good competition,” said Ansel Stewart, Franchise Holder for Metro Detroit Golden Gloves.
Katealia Chambers, President of Metro Detroit Golden Gloves and Team Leader of the delegation to Accra, said upon arrival at the Kotoka International Airport that the team was in Ghana for the first time to both win and learn.
Nii Adama Addy, aka Nii Gonti, First Vice-President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), who led the welcome party for the Metro Detroit Golden Gloves team in Accra, urged boxing fans to come and watch quality amateur boxing at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday.
“We have both prepared our boxers well, and the ring will decide. But we, the Black Bombers, want to win all 10 bouts to give our boxers the winning mentality. We are very glad to host them because we need more fights with unknown opponents to toughen our boys for the Olympic Games in LA in the USA,” he said.
The night has been dubbed ‘Fist of Fury 2026’ Fight Night.
