ACCRA, Ghana — July 4, 2025
Digital media researcher Kelly Lartey Mensah has lauded Hon. Sam George, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, for what he describes as a “transformational” briefing on Ghana’s digital future.
The remarks follow the Minister’s July 3rd press update at the Ghana Digital Briefing, which outlined key interventions in the country’s digital and AI governance ecosystem.
At the center of the update was a strategic meeting held on June 26 between the Ministry and TikTok’s West African Government Relations Team, where discussions focused on content regulation, child safety, and responsible platform moderation.
“The initiative is a major milestone in our cultural and social transformation agenda for a better and equitable digital economy,” Kelly Mensah noted in response to the Minister’s proposals.
Digital Safety Gets a Policy Boost
Minister George expressed grave concern about the surge of inappropriate content—particularly life, sex, and explicit material—on TikTok, citing the platform’s growing influence among Ghana’s youth. He emphasized the Ministry’s collaboration with TikTok to:
● – Enforce age restrictions
– Set up local content moderation teams
– Block culturally inappropriate content
– Ensure creator compensation fairness
– Support STEM-based educational feeds under the One Million Holders Initiative
“Establishment of content moderation and filtering hubs in Ghana will streamline our digital content landscape and sanitize the online environment,” he said.
TikTok’s Role in Ghana’s Digital Economy
With TikTok now dominating digital engagement across the 18–30 age demographic, Ghanaian policymakers and researchers have pushed for a more localized, regulated, and ethical content system.
Kelly Mensah, founder of Cedi Web Technologies and a lead AI strategist, emphasized the importance of platform accountability.
“TikTok has gained astronomical popularity within the largest population gap in Ghana, and the need to keep an eye on content is key. If this agenda is manifest, Ghana’s digital revolution will see a more sanitized and financially viable online economy.”
“Entrenching our digital governance of platforms with laws and policies will give us control over our digital culture’s transformation and position digital as a tool for true national development.”
Mensah praised the current NDC administration and President John Mahama for listening to digital advocates and involving stakeholders in policy creation.
“This is long overdue, and Sam George has really scored a 9/10 with his work in the sector.” – Kelly said to www.cediweb.com

PETITION TO GHANA AUTHORITIES OVER ALARMING XENOPHOBIA TREAT METED OUT TO CHINESE IN GHANA
Since 5th July 1960 China signed Diplomatic Relations with Ghana, there has never been any bad blood that has triggered so much hatred on Chinese nationals until recent issues of illegal mining.
The China-Ghana Chamber of Commerce has been forced to react because the stereotyping of Chinese in Ghana has assumed sadly ill dimensions.
The GoldBod Taskforce has arrested 10 Chinese nationals in Asankragua in the Western Region for their alleged involvement in illegal gold trading.
The individuals were picked up from a private residence where they were reportedly conducting unauthorised gold transactions.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, announced the arrests at a press conference on Wednesday.
The Chinese hold no grudges with Ghanaians but it appears the unfair treatment being served Chinese in Ghana has reached its boiling point of complete Diplomatic hatred and Xenophobia.
Why should an over 60 years relationship between China and Ghana be made to end abruptly because of an environmental problem mostly fuelled by the local Ghanaian people??
All of a sudden the Chinese have become targets even including those who are doing other genuine businesses aside those alleged to be engaged in Galamsey.
We are also seeking answers to why the local facilitators and the frontiers who lead the security to swoop on Chinese don’t get arrested.
The same Ghana people who lead the Chinese into the bushes are the same people leading security agencies to arrest Chinese.
Instead of going after the local people deeply rooted in the crimes, the Chinese are now the target.
If Ghana has reached a point where the country feels they don’t need the Chinese we demand immediate response from the Ghana Authorities including the President, the Chief of Staff, Ministry of the Interior, the GoldBod itself, tell us if we should send all our Chinese people away from Ghana.
Also Minerals Commission knows all those local people at the frontline responsible for leading the Chinese but these local people are always left off the hook with no arrest.
We want to know from the government of Ghana if all Chinese should pack out and leave Ghana and we are more than ready to send all our nationals away.
