Waste management giant, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has deployed more than 500 sanitation personnel, heavy-duty equipment and logistics to support the Presidential General Clean-Up Exercise as communities across Accra and across the country undertake intensive sanitation activities.
The company’s intervention forms part of efforts to complement government agencies, local assemblies, and residents in improving environmental cleanliness and addressing challenges linked to waste disposal and flooding.
The two-day exercise, which started on Friday, July 10, and ends on Saturday, July 11, 2026, has seen Zoomlion teams deployed to several locations to support waste evacuation, drain clearing, and general cleaning activities.
During an inspection of the Alajo Drains, President John Dramani Mahama cautioned Ghanaians against reckless waste dumping, stressing that drains are not “garbage instruments.” He lamented the disturbing items found in the Alajo drain, part of the Odaw stream, including silt, plastics, household waste, engine blocks, old furniture, and even dining tables.
Describing the June 29 floods as a “wake-up call,” the President urged citizens to change their attitudes and take greater environmental responsibility, adding that skip trucks are available across the city for proper waste disposal. He also announced plans to institute a monthly national clean-up day and disclosed that the Minister of Finance has released $150 million for dredging streams and related flood mitigation works.
Speaking on the company’s involvement, Zoomlion Operations Officer, Mr. Seth Adzraku, said the company mobilised more than 500 personnel alongside essential logistics, including tipper trucks, backhoes, waste collection vehicles, wheelbarrows, brooms, rakes and other sanitation tools to ensure effective operations.
According to him, the equipment was particularly useful in clearing heavily choked gutters, removing accumulated silt and evacuating waste from communities.
The company’s operations were visible in communities including Osu Beach, the Castle area, Chorkor, Nungua, Alajo, Mallam, Weija, Galilea, Tuba Junction and other parts of the Ga South Municipality. In these areas, Zoomlion workers supported residents and local authorities with sweeping, waste collection, drain desilting, and cleaning of public spaces.
The company also deployed specialised sanitation solutions, including mechanised equipment and fumigation support, as part of efforts to improve public health conditions.
The exercise saw collaboration between Zoomlion, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, and security institutions including the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Immigration Service.
The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, who accompanied the President during the Alajo inspection, also supported the initiative and emphasised the importance of stronger enforcement of sanitation regulations.
Zoomlion’s participation highlights the role of public-private partnerships in addressing Ghana’s sanitation challenges and providing practical solutions through manpower, equipment, and technical support. Stakeholders have maintained that beyond clean-up exercises, sustained sanitation improvement requires responsible waste disposal practices and effective enforcement of environmental laws.
