The entire Knutsford University community has been thrown into a state of solemn reflection following the passing of Abusuapayin Samuel Kobina Essel (1935–2026), the beloved father of the Pro Chancellor, Mr. John Kwamena Essel.
The Centre for African Studies, Leadership and Research (CASLeR), where Mr. Essel’s leadership is most deeply felt, says it stands firmly united with its Pro Chancellor in this difficult time of loss.
Abusuapayin Samuel Kobina Essel died at the age of 91, after a fulfilled life defined by resilience, unwavering faith, and an unshakeable devotion to family and community.
His earthly journey, which spanned over nine decades, left behind a legacy of custodianship, service, and moral strength that continues to speak through his children and all who knew him.
In honour of his memory, the family has announced a befitting funeral arrangement that reflects the breadth of his impact and stature.
A family wake-keeping will be held at Tantra Hill on Friday, 11th September 2026, to open the final rites.
This will be followed by a burial service at the Graduation Grounds of Knutsford University on Saturday, 12th September 2026, a symbolic venue that underscores the deep bond between the Essel family and the University community.
The late Abusuapayin will then be laid to rest in his hometown, Dominase Abedzie Etsi Sonkwaa, where his roots were firmly planted.
Final thanksgiving service will be held at the Nsawam Road Church of Christ on Sunday, 13th September 2026, to give glory to God for a life well lived.
For CASLeR, the passing of Abusuapayin Essel is more than a family bereavement; it is a moment to reflect on the source of the values that drive the Centre.
As a Centre dedicated to uniting African heritage with innovation and leadership, CASLeR says it sees in the life of the late Abusuapayin the very foundation of its own mission.
The Centre noted that the values of integrity, vision, custodianship and service that Mr. John Kwamena Essel embodies were first instilled in him by his late father.
“In mourning his father, we also celebrate the roots of Mr Essel’s leadership, which continue to inspire us to unite heritage with innovation,” CASLeR stated.
Speaking on behalf of the Centre, the Head of CASLeR, Nanayaw Kwakye Boadu, who has served Knutsford University for over a decade, shared a deeply personal tribute.
Mr. Boadu described the loss as one that resonates far beyond the immediate family, touching every member of the CASLeR family.
“This loss resonates profoundly with us. Mr Essel has been more than a leader; to me, he has been a father — guiding, mentoring, and nurturing with a spirit that embraces not only his family but all of us at CASLeR,” he said.
He continued: “To the Centre, he is a custodian of heritage and a visionary who bridges tradition with modern leadership. His father’s passing reminds us of the roots from which such vision springs — roots grounded in resilience, faith, and community.”
According to CASLeR, it is for this reason that Mr. John Kwamena Essel is regarded not just as Pro Chancellor, but as a father to all.
“To our Pro Chancellor, we say: you are not alone. Your CASLeR family stands with you, honouring your father’s memory and affirming the legacy he has passed on through you,” the Centre affirmed.
“We call him father because that is what he is to us — a father whose influence reaches far beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of all who serve under your leadership,” the statement added.
The University community prayed for strength for the Pro Chancellor and the entire Essel family as they navigate this painful period, while celebrating a legacy that will endure.
“May the soul of Abusuapayin Samuel Kobina Essel rest in perfect peace. May his memory strengthen us, and may his legacy continue to shine through the work of Knutsford University and CASLeR.”
