PRESS RELEASE

PRINPAG MARKS WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 2026, URGES RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM IN THE AGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

May 3, 2026

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) joins the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2026 under the global theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace”

At PRINPAG, we have elected to adopt the sub-theme “Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Safeguarding Press Freedom and Media Integrity.”

On this significant occasion, the National. Executive Committee of PRINPAG extends its heartfelt congratulations to all members for their unwavering dedication, resilience, and professionalism over the years. Your consistent commitment to ethical journalism and truth-telling continues to strengthen Ghana’s democratic foundations and uphold the credibility of the media landscape.

The sub-theme highlights the growing influence of artificial intelligence on journalism and the urgent need to safeguard media integrity in an evolving digital ecosystem.

While AI presents opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and expanded access to information, it also poses risks such as misinformation, manipulation, and ethical dilemmas.

PRINPAG urges its members to embrace these technological advancements responsibly, ensuring that accuracy, fairness, and human editorial judgment remain at the core of our work.

As key actors in Ghana’s democracy, we encourage all members to continue playing their roles—both individually and collectively—in sustaining democratic governance.

The media’s responsibility to inform, educate, and hold power accountable remains indispensable, now more than ever.

PRINPAG further calls on its members to persist in their objective, balanced, and constructive criticism of leadership across all sectors.

This critical function must be exercised with courage and integrity, without fear or favour. In doing so, we must remain hopeful and resolute, recognizing that the journey toward a more transparent and accountable society requires persistence and unity.

“We commend our members for their remarkable resilience and professionalism over the years. Even in the face of evolving challenges—economic pressures, technological disruption, and threats to press freedom—you have remained committed to the truth. As we navigate the age of artificial intelligence, I urge all members to continue supporting Ghana’s democracy in your own small ways, both individually and collectively. Let your voices remain strong, your criticism objective, and your hope unshaken.

Be assured that there are better days ahead, and the National Executive Committee that I lead is working tirelessly to advance the welfare and interests of every member,” stated Mr David Tamakloe, President of PRINPAG.

We acknowledge the challenges confronting media practitioners, including economic constraints, safety concerns, and the rapidly changing technological landscape. However, PRINPAG assures its members that there are better days ahead.

The National Executive Committee is actively pursuing strategic initiatives to enhance the welfare of members through advocacy, partnerships, capacity-building programmes, and other interventions aimed at strengthening the sustainability of our chosen profession.

As we commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting press freedom, upholding ethical standards, and adapting responsibly to emerging technologies in order to preserve the integrity of journalism in Ghana.

Signed

President
