MTN Ghana has completed an “extraordinary front nine” in its 30-year journey in the country, but the company must now approach its next phase with the same resilience, discipline and determination that have defined its success over the past three decades, the MTN Ghana Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson, has said.
Speaking at the MTN 30th Anniversary CEO Invitational Golf Tournament at the Achimota Golf Club on Saturday, the Board Chairman drew a striking parallel between the game of golf and MTN Ghana’s three-decade journey, describing both as long games in which success depends less on one spectacular moment than on consistency, patience, judgment and the ability to recover from setbacks.
He said, golf had taught him a lesson that extended far beyond the fairways, thus, a round cannot be won on the first hole.
Rather, he said, victory comes from navigating all 18 holes with discipline and deliberate effort, adjusting to changing conditions, recovering from difficult situations and maintaining focus on the ultimate destination.
“That, ladies and gentlemen, is also the story of MTN Ghana,” he said.
Reflecting on the company’s beginnings 30 years ago, the Chairman said there was no certainty at the time that MTN Ghana would grow to serve more than 30 million subscribers, that mobile money would become a lifeline for millions of Ghanaians, or that fibre connectivity would eventually reach homes and communities across the country.
The company, he said, simply took its stance, addressed the ball in front of it and played the best shot it could.
That journey, however, had not been without challenges.
In golfing terms, he said, MTN Ghana had encountered its share of regulatory bunkers, competitive hazards and unexpected storms that had forced the company to pause, reassess and change its approach.
But those challenges, he suggested, were part of the journey rather than reasons to abandon it.
“A good golfer does not abandon the round because of one bad hole,” he said, stressing that the ability to recover, adjust and play intelligently from wherever the ball had landed had been central to MTN Ghana’s resilience.
“Success comes from something deeper. It comes from consistency. It comes from judgment, from learning from mistakes, from recovering when things do not go according to plan, and perhaps most importantly, from staying the course,” he said.
The Chairman said those qualities had helped MTN Ghana build an extraordinary first nine, marked by the expansion of telecommunications services, the connection of communities, the empowerment of businesses, the growth of financial inclusion and the company’s contribution to Ghana’s digital transformation.
But he cautioned that the 30th anniversary should not be viewed as the end of the journey.
Instead, he described it as the point at which MTN Ghana must prepare for the “back nine,” a new phase presenting opportunities and challenges that would require even greater innovation, adaptability and commitment.
“Our back nine is already before us, bringing new opportunities and challenges, nationwide fibre expansion, the promise of 5G, artificial intelligence, greater innovation and a deeper, more sustainable partnership with the communities we serve,” he said.
He stressed that MTN Ghana’s ambition must include communities where people were still waiting for stronger connectivity and greater access to digital opportunities.
The next phase, he said, must therefore be pursued with the same discipline, resilience and integrity that had brought the company through its first 30 years.
The Chairman also used the occasion to acknowledge the collective effort behind MTN Ghana’s achievements, stressing that the company’s success could not be attributed to one individual, one board or one leadership team.
He paid tribute to employees who had worked to build and maintain the network, customer service personnel who had supported customers, regulators who had challenged the company to improve, business partners who had worked alongside it and, importantly, millions of Ghanaian customers who had continued to place their trust in MTN.
He said the company’s 30-year story was therefore one of partnership and collective achievement.
The choice of golf as a vehicle for the anniversary celebration was particularly appropriate, given the sport’s emphasis on discipline, integrity, mental focus, resilience, judgment and personal responsibility.
About 120 golfers from clubs across Ghana participated in the 18-hole competition, turning the Achimota Golf Club into a meeting point for corporate leaders, business executives and golf enthusiasts as MTN Ghana celebrated three decades of operations.
The occasion also reinforced the importance of relationships in sustaining organisations over time.
Achimota Golf Club President Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah, while congratulating MTN Ghana on its milestone, said the company’s contribution to Ghana’s digital landscape had been built on trust, partnerships and relationships accumulated over the years.
“Technology can connect devices. Networks can connect places. But ultimately, it is trust and relationships that connect people,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana for choosing Achimota Golf Club as the venue for the celebration and expressed the hope that the relationship between the company and the club would continue to grow.
While the anniversary speeches provided the broader significance of the occasion, the golfers ensured that the sporting contest itself ended on a high note.
Frederick Semenu Duvor emerged the Men’s Group A champion with 39 points, while Julienne Afri claimed the Ladies’ Group A title with the same score.
Yaw Mireku Jnr. produced one of the outstanding performances of the tournament, winning Men’s Group B with an impressive 45 points, while Kous Louanges Mang took the Ladies’ Group B title with 38 points.
Kofi Mangesi won Men’s Group C with 40 points after edging Derrick Morgan on countback, while Elorm R. Akuash Bonney claimed the Ladies’ Group C title with 42 points.
In the Seniors Division, Jan Vogel emerged winner of the men’s category with 39 gross, while Helen Appah topped the ladies’ category with 44 gross.
The tournament thus brought MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebration to a fitting conclusion — combining sporting excellence, corporate networking and reflection on a remarkable three decades.
