Consumers of illegal drugs in Berlin will from now on be able to have their purchased substances tested legally, anonymously and free of charge.

Consumers of illegal drugs in Berlin will from now on be able to have their purchased substances tested legally, anonymously and free of charge.

After years of discussions and preparations, the so-called drug checking, in which the ingredients are to be analyzed and impurities detected, has begun, the Senate Health Administration confirmed.

The story was first reported on Tuesday by the broadcaster RBB.

The State Institute for Forensic and Social Medicine (GerMed) is responsible for the analysis. Drugs such as marijuana, hashish, cocaine, ecstasy and speed can be handed in at three addiction counselling centres and the city’s gay counselling centre. Counselling sessions and consultation hours will also be offered.

The Social Democrats, the Left Party and the Greens decided to introduce the tests in their coalition agreement after Berlin’s 2016 elections.

Preparations then began, in which the public prosecutor’s office and the police were also involved through a cooperation agreement with the Berlin government.

Critics see the tests as an incentive for further drug use.
