The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended the conduct of its Constituency Executive Committee elections in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency following a decision by the party’s National Steering Committee after it received a petition from aggrieved aspirants challenging aspects of the electoral process.*

The decision was contained in an official memorandum dated **July 6, 2026**, and signed by the party’s Acting National Chairman, **Danquah Buttey Smith**, directing party officials in the Greater Accra Region to immediately halt the elections pending the resolution of outstanding issues.

The memorandum, addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Steering Committee and the Regional Chairman, stated that the National Steering Committee reached the decision during a meeting held on Monday, July 6, 2026, after reviewing concerns raised over the impending constituency elections.

According to the statement, the party considered a formal petition submitted by **Rose Abena Ankamah and eleven other aggrieved aspirants**, who questioned aspects of the electoral process in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency.

The National Steering Committee indicated that after deliberating on the petition, it resolved that the elections should not proceed until all outstanding issues relating to the constituency electoral album have been addressed.

“Following its deliberations, the National Steering Committee resolved that the Weija-Gbawe Constituency Elections should be put on hold until all issues relating to the constituency album are resolved in order to ensure a peaceful electoral process,” the memorandum stated.

The directive effectively places the constituency elections on hold until the party is satisfied that all concerns surrounding the voters’ register, referred to in the memorandum as the constituency album, have been fully resolved.

Party officials responsible for organizing the elections have also been instructed to immediately comply with the decision and suspend every activity connected to the electoral exercise.

“The Constituency Elections Committee is hereby directed to take the necessary steps to give immediate effect to this decision and ensure full compliance with the directives of the National Steering Committee,” the memorandum further emphasized.

Copies of the directive were simultaneously forwarded to the Constituency Elections Committee, the Constituency Executive Committee, the District Electoral Officer for the Weija-Gbawe District, as well as Rose Abena Ankamah and the other petitioners, ensuring that all parties to the dispute were formally notified of the decision.

Although the memorandum does not provide specific details of the grievances contained in the petition, the intervention by the party’s highest decision-making body between National Executive Committee meetings underscores the seriousness with which the complaints were treated.

The suspension is expected to provide the party with the opportunity to investigate and resolve all issues surrounding the constituency electoral album before a new date is fixed for the elections.

Political observers say the decision reflects the party’s effort to prevent disputes that could undermine internal cohesion and the credibility of its internal democratic processes.

By postponing the elections rather than allowing them to proceed amid unresolved concerns, the National Steering Committee appears to be prioritizing transparency, fairness and party unity ahead of the constituency polls.

The memorandum concluded by appealing for cooperation from all stakeholders as the party works toward resolving the issues and restoring confidence in the electoral process.
