Parliament of Ghana has confirmed the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong in the Netherlands following an incident at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

According to an official statement released by the Office of the Clerk to Parliament, the legislator, who represents the Asante Akyem North Constituency, was detained upon arrival at the airport under circumstances that are yet to be fully disclosed.

The statement noted that Parliament has become aware of the situation and is currently engaging the appropriate diplomatic channels to obtain comprehensive details surrounding the matter.

The communication, signed by Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, indicated that the leadership of the House has already initiated contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to follow developments closely.

Authorities say the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament together with the leadership of the House are treating the issue with urgency as efforts continue to establish the facts behind the detention.

The incident reportedly occurred at Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest international airports, located in Amsterdam.

Although details remain limited, parliamentary officials assured the Ghanaian public that updates would be provided once accurate and verified information becomes available.

The statement did not specify the reasons for the detention, the duration of the MP’s stay in the Netherlands, or whether any legal processes have been initiated against him.

Sources within Parliament say the matter has generated concern among lawmakers, particularly because it involves a sitting member of Ghana’s legislature on foreign soil.

The development has also sparked public interest across social media platforms, with many Ghanaians calling for clarity and transparency regarding the circumstances leading to the detention.

The leadership of the House further emphasized the importance of diplomatic cooperation in resolving matters involving Ghanaian public officials abroad.

Meanwhile, supporters and constituents of the MP in the Ashanti Region are said to be closely monitoring developments and awaiting further communication from Parliament.

The official statement concluded with an assurance that the matter is receiving the highest level of attention from parliamentary leadership, and that the public will be updated appropriately as investigations and diplomatic engagements continue.
