Legon, Ghana – March 6, 2025 – The APSU-HOPSA UG Chapter marked Ghana’s Independence Day with an inspiring Career Fireside Chat and Games Night at the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Hall, University of Ghana. The event, organised under the leadership of Chapter President Gyimah Nicholas and his executive team, aimed to bridge the gap between academia and industry, providing students with invaluable insights from top professionals.
Recognising the uncertainties many students face in choosing career paths, the initiative created a platform where aspiring professionals could engage with industry leaders, gain practical knowledge, and make informed decisions about their futures. The event’s compelling discussions and interactive sessions underscored APSU-HOPSA UG’s commitment to student empowerment.
Meet the Industry Experts
A distinguished panel of accomplished professionals, including two CEOs and a Chief Marketing Officer, graced the occasion and shared invaluable career guidance:
Prof. Kobby Mensah – CEO, Ghana Tourism Company Ltd & APSU-HOPSA Patron
Mr. Rex Jones Baffoe – CEO, Feferd Business Company Ltd
Mr. Ali Ajami – Chief Marketing Officer, Twellium Industrial Company Ltd
Key Takeaways from the Discussion
For nearly two hours, these seasoned leaders engaged in a dynamic discussion, offering practical advice on how students can strategically position themselves as top candidates in their respective fields.
The conversation provided students with thought-provoking insights into career success and professional growth:
Prof. Kobby Mensah urged students to remain tenacious, emphasizing that personal background should never be a limitation to success. “Your drive and determination will take you further than any external circumstances,” he remarked.
Mr. Ali Ajami highlighted the importance of strategic positioning and personal branding, using a marketing analogy to drive home his point: “If your positioning is wrong, you will fail to reach your target audience.” He illustrated this with real-world examples, explaining how businesses tailor their products—such as affordable bottled water sold to thirsty passengers—to meet consumer needs effectively.
Mr. Rex Jones Baffoe addressed the ever-relevant debate between corporate careers and entrepreneurship. Drawing from his decade-long experience as a business owner, he advised students not to rush into self-employment too soon. “Corporate experience is invaluable; don’t succumb to the pressure of becoming an entrepreneur too early,” he cautioned.
The engaging panel discussion, expertly moderated by President Gyimah Nicholas, allowed for interactive participation, ensuring students had the opportunity to ask questions and seek personalised advice.
Games, Networking & Lasting Impact
Following the insightful discussion, attendees unwound with a fun-filled games session featuring virtual and card games. The evening fostered camaraderie and networking, strengthening bonds among students and facilitating mentorship opportunities.
With over 40 undergraduate students in attendance, the event was widely praised for its impact and relevance. One enthusiastic participant, Josephine Kanga (HOPSA ‘21), shared her excitement: “The programme was incredibly insightful and educative—I can’t stop
talking about it!”
