From the Pit to the Rock
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. Psalms 40:2
The psalmist in Psalm 40 celebrates God’s gracious deliverance from a place of distress into a life of peace, stability, and freedom.
Verse 2 paints a vivid picture of God’s saving power: “He drew me up from the horrible pit, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock and established my steps.”
A pit represents a place of despair, helplessness, and impending destruction. It is a place where hope seems lost.
The miry clay symbolizes unstable and slippery ground. It is soft, muddy terrain where every attempt to move forward only causes one to sink deeper. It is a picture of life’s struggles, where human effort alone cannot bring lasting rescue.
The reality of the pit and the miry clay is that no one trapped there can rescue themselves. It takes someone standing on higher ground to reach down and lift them up. That is exactly what God does. In His mercy, He stretches out His hand, draws us out of our hopelessness, and brings us into a place of safety.
God does not stop at delivering us from the pit. He sets our feet upon the Rock – a place of strength, stability, and security – and establishes our steps. He takes us from despair to hope, from instability to steadfastness, and from sinking ground to a firm foundation.
Our lifting is the work of the Lord. He alone has the power to rescue, restore, and establish us.
May God lift you out of every pit and deliver you from every slippery place. May He set your feet upon the Rock, establish your steps, and give you a firm footing in every area of your life. From the pit and the miry clay, you will stand on solid ground by His grace. Shalom.
